“ This tour-de-force of Italian verismo is energized by a superb trio of principals: tenor Drew Slatton in the title role as the brave, doomed poet, baritone Luis Ledesma as servant turned revolutionary leader Gerard, and soprano Carla Thelen Hanson as Maddalena, the object of their passion.
Slatton has a range of highlights as the poet Chenier, who boldly (and foolishly) denounces the aristocracy in Act I (Un di all'azzuro spazio).  His voice, at once defiant and plaintive, serves him well, especially in Chenier's poignant final aria (Come un bel di di maggio) and duet (Vicino a te) with Maddalena."
